Mike Lummio is the founder and head instructor at Bushcraft Northwest. Mike has been fascinated with the natural world for as long as he can remember and decided to turn this passion into his life's work. After receiving a Biology/Environmental Science degree from Washington State University, he was able to apply his knowledge of bushcraft while performing field work and research for various organizations around the Pacific Northwest.
Mike was first exposed to bushcraft over 25 years ago during a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Since then, he has had the good fortune of learning bushcraft and traditional wilderness skills through hands-on training, his own experience, and the generousity of others. He created Bushcraft Northwest to continue this tradition and has taught these skills to both civilian and military personnel from around the United States. Mike is also a traditional bowhunter, dual sport motorcyclist, fly fisherman, and one heck of a good cook.
Rick’s passion for the outdoors started early. As a teen his first real outdoor adventure was spending a week on the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee and North Carolina. Next, he flew to New Mexico for the 21 day Southwest Outward Bound program. Now he was hooked and wanted to do and learn more. He learned basic rock climbing techniques and scuba diving from his cousin who was a Marine Force Recon member. He later obtained his PADI certification
Rick found a new source of adventure and training when he joined the US Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne. While in the 82nd Airborne, he completed his first medical training and obtained his Basic EMT. He later went through Special Forces selection and graduated as a Special Forces Medic, (18D). As a medic, Rick found his calling and has continued to hone his medical skills, especially those related to Wilderness Medicine.
Rick is now a practicing Physician Assistant and has been for 17 years. His focus is on emergency and remote medicine just completing 5 years working in remote Alaska. Rick now plans on integrating his passion for the outdoors with his passion for medicine and sharing his experience and knowledge through BCNW. His free time is spent pursuing the art of traditional archery, dual sport motorcycle touring, fly-fishing and spending time in the Outdoors. He is currently a member of the WMS, Wilderness Medical Society, SEMPA, Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants and SOMA, Special Operations Medical Association.
